REVIEW
What a surprise this little pack has been, for just on 12 months now I have used and abused it. Predominately this pack is designed very much with the bow hunter in mind, I am not a bow hunter (not yet anyway). I do hunt though, chasing all manner of species deer, ducks and small game, fishing as well, trout and native species.
At 19 litres capacity and weighing in at just less than 1KG the Tenzing TZ1140 is a perfect size for afternoon and morning missions where mobility is the key. With the capacity to carry 2 litres of water in a bladder at the back of the pack, some fruit bars and nuts, a camera, and some 8x32 binoculars in the little specified soft lined pouch you are ready to roll. (One little vice with this pouch, the elastic tab has come unlatched a few times during heightened activity I haven’t lost anything out of it yet but it’s a possibility I guess).
Ducking under limbs, jumping from rock to rock, climbing, descending sometimes at speed is all achievable with this little pack on, scouting for deer in the pre-season (NSW) for me anyway is all about covering ground, new ground, old ground, cataloging likely spots, feeding areas, bedding spots, trails that link them together, checking game cameras, changing batteries, swapping SD cards. With a bigger pack your movement is restricted, the weight slows you up. The bigger pack will come into its own later on when you are hunting, moving slow, moving between spots already catalogued……. and hopefully packing meat out……
Hunting wise I have found this pack to be the perfect partner when it comes to small game, shot gunning for rabbits, foxes and the like, mobile pursuits, again a theme that continues to ring true with this pack. With the ability to switch the single shoulder strap from left to right shoulder it suits left or right handed shooters, and with no strap to hinder a good mount to shoulder and cheek there are no excuses to miss. I utilise the little rangefinder/bino pouch on the waist strap for a dozen or so shells and top this up if the shooting is fast and furious.
Fishing wise it’s a great pack for flicking lures on little creeks and rivers for trout and natives. Again for a very mobile pursuit, with a small pack of lures in the back, some leader material in the little waist mounted pouch and 2 litres of fresh water to keep you hydrated, there is not a stretch of creek that cannot be explored.
The pack comes in a couple of different soft touch low noise camouflage patterns, with dyneema sewn into the hard wearing areas. All the zippers have oversize pull tabs making them a sinch to open even with gloved hands. Padding is ample and breathable on both the back of the pack and the waist belt. With 12 compartments it’s not hard to have a place for everything and everything in its place.
Some modifications……only slight, as with most packs the straps, they come with are made extra-long to account for the different body shapes and sizes. Tenzing have thought of this and have some handy keeper bands and tabs sewn into the end of the strap. My personal preference is to cut the extra length of the strap off at an angle then melt the end with a lighter or match to stop any fraying. The other is not so much a modification but a precaution. As with all my hunting clothing, my packs are no different, I wash them in a no glow, no scent laundry detergent, as I don’t really see the point in camouflage patterns on clothing and packs if to an animal you look like a UV neon sign. The good sports washes also assist with water repellence, breath-ability and moisture wicking on modern fabrics.
I have found it hard to find fault with this pack, a lot of thought and ingenuity have gone into such a small package, its targeted market is most definitely the bow hunter, but it is handy for so much more……
